- Embracing the Chaos: An Authentic Family Session at Casa Feliz
Forget perfection! The best memories are captured in the beautifully fleeting chaos of childhood. The Guttermans at Casa Feliz in Historic Winter Park, FL Throwback to the Gutterman family at Flagler Beach Pier in 2022 There’s something incredibly special about reconnecting with old friends and seeing the lives they've built. Recently, I had the joy of photographing the Gutterman family. Heidi , a good friend from my high school days, asked me to capture new memories for them at the beautiful, historic Casa Feliz , located just off Park Avenue in the heart of Winter Park, Florida. The last time we did family portraits together was in September of 2022 at the Flagler Beach Pier —before their youngest daughter, Etta, was born, and just before Hurricane Ian caused significant damage to the pier. Back in high school, Heidi would often share with our group of friends her dreams of one day becoming a mother to little girls who would follow in her footsteps as a dancer and performer. Now, it's truly incredible to see those dreams coming true for her. Heidi and her husband, Alex—an amazingly patient and devoted girl dad—have built a beautiful family together. They’ve created a warm, loving home for their three daughters: Liesel, Claire, and Etta. Each girl reflects Heidi’s vibrant spirit and grace in her own unique way, and watching them together feels like witnessing a dream made real. THE SESSION Family photo sessions are all about capturing the true essence of a family, especially when young children are involved. For this shoot, we moved at a relaxed pace, giving the girls space to play, interact, and let their personalities shine. I always recommend at least an hour for family sessions—especially with kids. It allows plenty of time to get the portraits you envision while also giving children room to settle in and feel comfortable. All too often parents go into their family session with a picture-perfect vision, hoping for flawless smiles and perfectly posed moments, but this is rarely how it goes. There may be stubborn "nos," awkward smiles, short attention spans, or the occasional tantrum. And that’s perfectly okay! Some of the most genuine and heartfelt images come from embracing the chaos and letting kids be themselves. That’s when the real magic happens and we capture those raw, authentic moments that truly reflect who they are. As I watched each of the Gutterman girls, I couldn’t help but be reminded of my own childhood. I’m the youngest of three sisters, and seeing little Etta chase after Liesel and Claire was like taking a trip down memory lane. Claire, with her big smiles and eagerness to pose, was a natural in front of the camera. Liesel, the oldest, had a quiet confidence, smiling while also subtly taking charge of the session, reminding us to keep track of how many photos we were snapping. Little Etta added a dose of energy and sweetness to the shoot, while Heidi and Alex balanced it all with patience and kindness. Just had to do a side by side comparison of the Gutterman Girls to the Camera Girls circa '91 or '92. That little one in the middle with the red headband...thats me! EMBRACING IMPERFECTION One of the most important things I always remind parents is to let go of expectations and embrace the beautiful unpredictability of photographing young children. I always aim to capture at least one "money shot" where everyone’s standing just right and smiling on cue, but my creativity truly thrives in documenting the genuine, unscripted moments that reflect the heart of your family. Instead of stressing over the giggles and wiggles or the messy hair and wrinkled clothes, I suggest for my families to lean into the reality of this stage of life. This season, with its carefree laughter, scraped knees, and boundless energy, is fleeting—and these are the memories you’ll likely cherish most. While there will always be more opportunities for polished, posed portraits as your children grow, it’s these raw, unfiltered moments of joy, silliness, and connection that tell the real story of your family. Trust your photographer, embrace the chaos, and let the memories unfold naturally. A huge thank you to the Gutterman family for letting me document their love, laughter, and spirit. I truly enjoyed every moment of this Casa Feliz family session and look forward to watching their family continue to blossom. CHECK OUT MORE FAMILY PHOTO GALLERIES! - My 2025 Word of the Year & What It Means For My Business
How setting intentions will impact my personal life as well as my business goals. Reflecting on the Past Year At the end of each year, I take time to reflect on the experiences I've had, the achievements I've reached, the lessons I’ve learned, and the goals I’m still working toward. It’s my way of closing one chapter and setting the tone for the next. While many people dive into the new year with resolutions or lengthy to-do lists, I’ve adopted a simpler approach: choosing a single word—a “Word of the Year.” This word becomes my guiding intention, helping me stay focused, grounded, and aligned with the energy I want to bring into the year ahead. 2024: Embracing Discipline My word for 2024 was Discipline. I was feeling particularly motivated during 2024 to regain some control over my poor habits and implement new ones. For instance, I drank more water and less soda and remained consistent with exercise. I worked on sticking to a routine and staying focused when getting work done for my business. As an entrepreneur/business owner, you are your own boss, which means, aside from the expectations of your clients, you have no one there to keep you on track with your projects and deadlines. In fact, you have to set your own deadlines and create your own processes. In the past I allowed myself to become distracted and procrastinate when it all felt too overwhelming. So for all of 2024 I challenged myself to stay Disciplined in order to meet deadlines and reach my business goals as well as personal ones. Introducing 2025’s Word of the Year: LIGHT As I step into 2025, I’ve chosen my Word of the Year: LIGHT! It feels like the perfect word to guide me into this new chapter. While in 2024 I made a lot of progress towards becoming more disciplined, I realized toward the end of the year that I had lost a bit of my spark. It was a slower year for my business. I booked fewer weddings and sessions than in previous years, which gave me the opportunity to focus on rebranding and redesigning my website—projects I’m really proud of! I tried to stay productive while also embracing the quieter season to rest and recharge. But by December, I could tell something was off. I wouldn’t call it laziness, but I felt more drained than usual, and the slower pace left me feeling irritable and less like my usual positive, motivated self. That’s when I knew I needed a shift. I want to approach 2025 with a lighter heart and a brighter outlook. I want to focus on positivity, patience, and finding the good in every situation. I want to be someone who not only sees the light but spreads it, too—through my work, my relationships, and my everyday life. That’s why my word for 2025 is LIGHT ! How LIGHT Will Impact My Business Choosing Light isn't just a personal intention—it’s a strategic decision for my business as well. Here's how it will influence my entrepreneurial journey in 2025: Navigating Challenges Gracefully With Light as my guide, I want to face challenges with patience and grace. I hope to see setbacks as temporary and find the bright side in every situation, staying resilient and optimistic no matter what comes my way. Inspiring Positivity in Client Relationships By approaching my business with Light , I hope to foster warmth and optimism in every client interaction. My goal is for couples to feel at ease during shoots, turning sessions into memorable experiences. I want that lightness to shine through in my work and for clients to associate my brand with joy and connection. Attracting Opportunities with a Brighter Outlook A mindset centered on lightness and positivity could open new doors for my business. I hope it helps me build connections, attract like-minded clients, and create opportunities that align with my energy and values. Finding Creativity in Every Moment Light aligns perfectly with photography, both literally and figuratively. I hope to embrace the beauty in every moment—whether it’s capturing the perfect golden hour or finding inspiration in unexpected places—and use it to spark creativity and elevate my artistry. Embracing Failure as Part of the Journey With a new focus comes new challenges, and I recognize that failure is an inevitable part of growth, especially in running a business. Embracing Light means understanding that setbacks are not the end but rather stepping stones toward success. Whether it's a slow calendar, delayed deadline, or unexpected obstacles, each challenge offers valuable lessons that contribute to my personal and professional development. By integrating this mindset, I aim to create a resilient business that can adapt and thrive despite uncertainties. Light will serve as a constant reminder to view failures as opportunities to learn, improve, and move forward with greater wisdom and strength. Looking Ahead As I embark on 2025 with Light , I'm excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. This word will be my compass, guiding me through both triumphs and challenges. I invite you to join me on this journey—whether you're choosing your own Word of the Year or pursuing your goals with similar intentions. Here's to a focused, grounded, and transformative year ahead!
- My First Market Photo Booth: How It Went & What's Next!
A deeper look at my first-ever market experience. From prep to lessons learned. Last month I stepped into something totally new and exciting! I hosted my first-ever photo booth at a maker's market! As someone who’s spent years photographing weddings and portraits, this was a fun, new experience that scratched a creative itch I've been feeling for a while. Normally I’m used to capturing once-in-a-lifetime moments for couples and families at photo sessions or weddings. This booth gave me the chance to create a space where people could step in, have fun, and make memories in a totally different way. There were many logistics to figure during the planning process, but my eye for detail definitely kicked in, helping me map out every little aspect so I could feel confident and fully prepared for the event. I love making lists having a solid plan in place ensured everything ran smoothly and made the whole experience all the more enjoyable. I walked away from this event feeling inspired, already thinking about ways to improve and make my next pop-up even better. But first—let’s talk about how this all came together! Prepping for the Market: Exciting, Exhausting, and Totally Worth It! For a while, I had the idea in the back of my mind that hosting a pop-up photo booth at local markets would be a great way for me to stretch my creative muscle while also promoting my business to a new group of potential clients. When my friend, Chantal, shared that her small business, Rooted & Co . had partnered with Oh Hey Cafe! in Orlando to host a Galentine's Day Market, and that they were accepting vendor applications, I reached out immediately! After chatting with her, gathering all the details, and attempting some quick budget calculations (which, let's be honest, kinda flew out the window once I got started) I decided this was an opportunity I didn't want to miss. I jumped straight into planning and spent the next couple weeks ordering supplies, shopping for materials, and mapping out exactly how I wanted the booth to run. I knew I wanted it to be interactive, fun, and designed to fit the Galentine’s theme, all while showcasing my photography services. Here’s what I decided to offer: 🎀 A Free Photo Booth – Market-goers could stop by and snap their own photos at no charge. For those wanting a professional shot, I captured their portraits with my camera, and they could later purchase downloads from an online gallery. 💌 Polaroid V-Day Card Craft – A budget-friendly, hands-on activity that was a huge hit with kids! After I took their Polaroid, they could sit at the craft station and decorate their own Valentine’s Day card using stickers, stamps, and pens. 🌸 Polaroid Keepsake Picture Frame – A more elevated option where guests took a Polaroid and placed it into a glass floating frame with dried flowers to create a beautiful, take-home keepsake—perfect for couples and friends! 📸 Mini Sessions – A higher-end offering for those wanting a professional 10-minute session in front of my backdrop, including five complimentary digital downloads. These could be pre-booked or reserved on the day of the market. ✨ SEE HOW I CREATED THE POLAROID KEEPSAKE PICTURE FRAME! ✨ Market Day: A Whirlwind of Fun and Creativity The morning of the market started early, which was a bit rough considering I had been up until 3am the night before putting together all the final details. But once I was up and out the door, the excitement kicked in and I was stoked! I had packed everything the day before and double-checked my lists, so I knew I was fully prepared. My parents met me at the café to unload, and my mom stayed the entire day to help set up the photo booth run the craft station (a total rockstar!). My booth featured a soft, flirty Galentine’s-themed backdrop with lace, ribbons, and satin draping. As soon as we finished setting up, the first guests arrived, and from there, the day flew by. So many people stopped by to snap photos, and watching them get creative with the Polaroid crafts made all the prep work completely worth it! I had so many great conversations throughout the day, chatting with market-goers about my photography services, connecting with families, and sharing lots of smiles and laughter as people enjoyed the booth. Seeing groups of friends and couples walk away with keepsakes from the day was incredibly rewarding, and I was so delighted to meet fellow vendors! Everyone was so welcoming, and I loved hearing about their businesses, sharing experiences, and making new connections in the local creative community. One of the biggest things I took away from this experience was how naturally I fell into the fast-paced flow of the market. Thanks to my background in weddings and events, I’m no stranger to juggling multiple tasks at once, trouble shooting on the fly, while also maintaining a pleasant demeanor when interacting with customers. Though there were moments of back-to-back crowds, I never felt overwhelmed. Taking photos, answering questions, networking, processing payments, and keeping an eye on the craft station all felt second nature. I thrive in these dynamic environments, and instead of feeling stressed, I found myself fully enjoying the energy of it all. A huge part of that was thanks to my mom, who was there the entire day helping guests with their Polaroid crafts and keeping everything running smoothly. She was instrumental in making the booth a success, sharing the load so I could focus on capturing photos and interacting with guests. Of course, with any first-time experience, there are always things to refine and improve. As I think ahead to future markets, I already have ideas for how to make my photo booths even better! ✨ WATCH MY MARKET DAY "GET READY WITH ME!" ✨ Looking Ahead: What I've Learned and What's In Store This first experience with markets has me hooked and I definitely want to do more in the future. It was such a refreshing change of pace from weddings and portrait sessions, allowing me to stretch my creativity in new ways. Through this experience I developed a workflow and established some processes that I’ll continue to refine as I go. Of course, I also learned a few valuable lessons—things I can improve on and implement to make future markets even better! Efficiency is key 🔑 Refining my market day workflow will be a top priority to keep things running smoothly during busy moments. As part of that, I plan to soon invest in a better POS system to make payment processing more seamless and efficient. Prep, prep, prep 📝 Having a solid game plan in place ahead of time made all the difference. I created checklists, planned my budget (even if I went a little over), and mapped out the photo booth concept well in advance to avoid last-minute scrambling. Packing everything up the night before meant the morning of was a breeze and allowed for me to dive right into the event with confidence. Definitely a strategy I’ll stick with for future markets! It’s not just about pictures—it’s about connections 🤝 While this wasn’t an event focused on making a profit, it was a fantastic opportunity to network, build relationships, and introduce people to what I do. I realized how valuable it would be to have more materials on hand to share more details about about my wedding and portrait photography services. Not only with market-goers, but with vendors as well. Connecting with fellow business owners was a huge highlight—meeting talented creatives, exchanged ideas, and even discussed potential collaborations. These relationships are just as important as any sale. All in all, it was a great way to connect with potential clients beyond just the booth experience. THANKS! Let's Do This Again Sometime! To everyone who stopped by for a photo, crafted a Polaroid, or just said hello—thank you! Your support meant the world, and I truly enjoyed connecting with each and everyone of you! I can’t wait to do it all again soon, and already have something in the works. So be sure to stay tuned for the next one. Until next time! ✌🏻
